Woolrich celebrates the 50th anniversary of Giancarlo Piretti’s Plia Chair for Milano Design Week 2019

Woolrich is celebrating functional design and the iconic folding Plia chair in honour of the 58th edition of Milan’s renowned Salone del Mobile. Initially founded in 1961 to promote Italian furniture and furnishing exports, it has now become one of the most keenly awaited events in the furniture world.

Woolrich is celebrating functional design and the iconic folding Plia chair in honour of the 58th edition of Milan’s renowned Salone del Mobile.

Designed by Piretti in 1967 while working as an interior designer for Castelli, an Italian design company that is now recognised as the foremost manufacturer of Italian design in the 20th century, the Plia became a symbolic piece and eventually a distinguished part of the brand. Born from simplicity, innovation and functionality – its folding system allows it to be opened and closed with a single node.

50 years after its debut, Piretti reveals a fresh take on the legendary Plia by introducing graphic markings into the mix. Distributing the re-released Plia as well as well as sponsoring the event, the stronghold of Italian design Codice Icona, is at the forefront of its return.

Attendees of the event are taken on a journey via an exhibition of Giancarlo Piretti’s past work at the Corso Venezia 3 flagship store. The photography exhibition which, will also display Castelli’s history, highlights the designer’s influence on disciplines beyond his own. From photography to fashion, from interior design to industrial design: his work crossed borders and banished boundaries.

The launch space, at Corso Venezia 3, is an apt reflection of how modernity and tradition can become the solid foundation for an innovative and unforgettable experience.

Piretti attended the event along with journalist Decio Carugati and artist Giovanni Anceschi.
