Woolrich and The Woolmark Company joined forces once again for a special project together with the Accademia Costume & Moda in Rome. The project aims to educate young designers about the innumerable qualities of Merino wool as well as The Woolmark Company’s passion for innovation.
An organic collaboration, Woolrich is known for their Arctic Parka, high quality outdoor garments and their legendary wool blankets have been woven since 1830 whilst The Woolmark Company is the global authority on Merino wool – not to mention the owner of the Woolmark logo (a quality assurance symbol applied to more than 5 billion garments).
Ten design students from the Academy were given the opportunity to create an entire outfit each that expresses Woolrich’s values and transfer them onto iconic Merino wool garments. The young students were tasked with the challenging endeavour of interpreting the Woolrich DNA, also known as The Original Outdoor Clothing Company, whilst simultaneously incorporating the natural performance qualities of Merino wool: elasticity, breathability and water resistance.
Woolrich Prize winner Francesco Castaldo incorporated a functional QR code into our iconic buffalo check, reinterpreting the idea of designer as storyteller. Castaldo’s work will be displayed alongside 9 other finalists at our Rome store in Via del Babuino 54 / 55 until April 23rd 2019.
Woolrich continues to support the next generation of creators, following the SS19 campaign with the NYU Tisch School of the Arts, by offering an internship to a winner of the competition. The Woolmark Company is also offering an internship to the other winner as well as inviting all 10 finalists to attend one of their internationally organised courses, created especially for fashion schools and aimed at the knowledge and versatility of Merino wool.
